History
The
Rainbow Bookfest is an annual Seattle event honoring
authors of color and celebrating the works they create.
Every year the Bookfest seeks to identify and
reward emerging authors of color in grades 6-12 by
holding an essay contest and awarding prizes on the day
of the Bookfest.
The essays are judged in categories separated by
grade (6th to 9th, 10th
to 12th) with first, second, and third place
being awarded for each category.
Winners from each category will be invited to
read from their essays at the Bookfest.
This Year’s Theme
The
theme of this year’s essay contest is: “What
does reading have to do with success?”
Be sure in answering this question to think
carefully about what success might mean to you, your
family, and your community.
Guidelines & Rules
1.
The recommended
length for essays is 600 words for the 6th-9th
grade division and 1000 words for the 10th-12th
grade division.
These lengths are only guidelines and essays of
longer or shorter length will still be considered for
prizes.
2.
Use
of profanity in an essay will result in
disqualification.
3.
Essays must be original.
Plagiarism will result in disqualification.
4.
Only
one entry is allowed per student.
5.
Entries must be received by
March 1st
to be guaranteed consideration for prizes
6.
Past
winners are not eligible to win.
